We've all been there. One minute we're hanging with our BFFs and the next minute we're in the middle of a scene so thick with tension, a knife couldn't cut it. Everyone involved knows it's childish, yet somehow the drama continues.
What's a person supposed to do?
It's said the best way to avoid drama is stop gossiping with others. It's pretty common that when friends get together they start talking about people...people who've irritated them, people who've hurt them, people who've intrigued them. It may seem harmless enough, but what was said will eventually get back to the ones being talked about. It always does, because people are terrible about keeping secrets.
This gossip not only hurts feelings, but it can also negatively affect someone's life. Some young people have been so affected by gossip that they have tried to end their own lives.
You can rise above the gossip by refusing to participate.
- Don't listen to or spread rumors about others.
- Try changing the subject when one of your friends starts to tell their juicy story or complain about someone.
- Try adding the good things about the person they are wanting to talk about. Turn the conversation over to how sweet, funny, or smart the other person is.
- If someone confides in you, keep it confidential.
Refusing to gossip will help keep the drama away and will also let others know that you are a trustworthy person.
