An Easy Way to Relieve Stress

Stress.  It's a word we all know.

According to the definition, stress is our body’s reaction to a challenging situation.

The challenges can range from a horrible experience, such being physically abused, to a less horrible experience, such as asking someone out for a date. Regardless of the challenge, it seems we can't avoid becoming stressed.

However, there is a way we can fight it. Naturally.  All we need to do is step outside in the sun.

Sunlight Helps Us Feel Happy

Sun does amazing things for our bodies.  First, it helps us produce serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical our body makes which causes us to feel in a "good mood." Researchers have found that the more sunlight we are exposed to, the more serotonin our brains produce.   (Baker Heart Research Institute)

Sunlight Helps Our Sleep

Believe it or not, soaking in some rays for at least 15 minutes a day, especially in the morning, may also help us sleep better.  Being in the sun helps our bodies turn off a chemical called melatonin, something our body produces to make us feel sleepy. According to an article in U.S. News & World Report, spending time each day in the sun may enable us to produce a more stable night time and day time clock so we'll have less trouble sleeping when the sun goes down.

Being Outside with Plants also Helps Ease Stress

The sun is not the only thing outside that can help us feel happier.  Plants can, too.  Plants produce something called phytoncides. Phytoncides are chemicals that plants and trees release into the air for protection from insects and rot. These chemicals, which linger in the air causing us to breathe them in, also happen to reduce stress.  (European Journal of Applied Physiology, March 2011)

So if you're feeling stressed out, lighten up!

Literally.

Go outside and take a walk among the plants and the sun.
You might be surprised to find that as the sun rises, so does your mood.

My Friend Doesn't Think He's Depressed, But He Is!

I have a friend whose dad recently died.  I've noticed a huge change in his behavior, which indicates he may have depression, but he insists he's fine.  How do I know he's depressed?  Here are some of the signs.

1.  His sleeping habits have changed.
Picture
Suddenly, he is staying up all night and sleeping most of the day.  He's not participating in his normal activities, and hasn't been going to school or work because he's sleeping.

2. He's in Pain
Picture
It's not just his heart that is hurting; it's also his body.  He has headaches, and his back hurts.  Research shows that 75% of people who suffer from depression experience pain that makes their depression worse.

3. He's Gaining Weight

urning to food for comfort is starting to take a toll on his weight.  A significant change in diet and weight is another sign of depression.

4.  He is glued to his electronics.
Picture
He is glued to his i-phone, Facebook, and television.  He can't seem to turn them off. When someone's internet use gets out of control, that's another sign of depression.

5. He's having trouble making up his mind.

He can't seem to make decisions, even easy ones.

6.  He loses his temper easily.

He gets easily irritated and loses his temper, even when it's little things that he'd normally ignore or laugh about.  In a recent study, more than half of depressed people say that they feel grumpy, foul-tempered, and angry

So what do I do now....now that I think he is depressed and needs help?

I'll talk with him about it and encourage him to go to someone for help.   I'll let him know that I care about him and I want him to be feeling better.

If he doesn't listen to me,  then I'll talk to his family about my concerns.  Most of all, I'll let my friend know that depression is nothing to be embarrassed about.  It's not a sign of weakness or a sign of a defective brain.  It's just a symptom of something, like the sniffles is a symptom of a cold.  Sometimes you need to have those symptoms checked out by a doctor to find out what's going on, and that's what I hope he'll do.

Please Just Listen

Sometimes I just need someone to listen. I don't need any answers.  You know what I mean?  Sometimes there are days where I wouldn't even know how to describe what I need, because I'm not quite sure. My range of emotions bounce around from one extreme to another, and I find myself weary.

Weary of carrying my story alone.

So I want to share it, if only to get it off my shoulders for a little while.
To have someone affirm how hard it must be.
And to hear a few hopeful words to let me know they see me.  They hear me.  They care.

I just need someone to be present and really listen.

That's why I love my Lifegroup.  It's a group of people from my church who are there for me when I need it.  They lovingly help me carry my load, and I lovingly lend a hand to carry theirs.  It's nice doing life together.

It wasn't easy reaching out to them, because I was afraid of not fitting in. But I'm so glad I took the risk.

There's a group out there for you, too.  Waiting and hoping you'll take the step.  They want to help you with your story.  They want to  ease the load off of your shoulders. You'll be a perfect fit.

And you'll find someone to listen...when you need it.
